FINAL AP & OL POLLS: MOUNTAIN VIEW #5 For the second year in a row the Mountain View Cougars finished the regular season ranked in the top five in the state of
MOUNTAIN VIEW MOVES UP TO #5 Coming off a convincing 31-16 win over previously Fifth Ranked Hermiston on Thursday night (10/9),
MOUNTAIN VIEW'S DEFENSE TOO MUCH FOR HERMISTON
On the first cold and snowy night of the 2008 football season, the fifth ranked Hermiston Bulldogs were in town for a match up that would go a long way in determining the next IMC champion.
With a loss a week earlier to unranked Summit, seventh ranked Mountain View which fell out of the drivers seat in the IMC, was determined to get back to their winning ways.
And it wasn't as if the Cougar's had played poorly on defense in the loss to the Storm. In fact the Mountain View defense only gave up a late touchdown, and had given up the fourth fewest points in the entire state. But the Cougar offense had less than 100 yards of total offense in last week's loss and simply needed a boost.
The Mountain View defense would turn out to be the key once again against Hermiston when on the first play from scrimmage, Cougar D-Tackle Javier Herrera forced a fumble from the Bulldog tailback and fell on the ball for the first turnover of the game.
A few plays later, Mountain View's Scott McCreery ran 18 yards around the left side for the touchdown and the Cougars led 7-0.
Mountain View would go on to lead 17-3 at the half, and 31-10 before giving up a late touchdown to make the final score 31-16.
Scott McCreery had a huge game on offense for the Cougars with 240 yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground while Pat Cashman picked off 2 passes (that's 5 interceptions in 2 weeks), including returning one pick 45 yards for a touchdown against Hermiston.
In all, the Cougars forced 7 Bulldog turnovers in their dominating victory.
With the win, Mountain View moves into 2nd place in the IMC at 3-1 (5-1 overall) and will host The Dalles-Wahtonka next Friday night (10/17) for homecoming.

COUGARS OVERPOWER THE BUCKAROOS!
The Pendleton Round Up is a world famous event which over 50,000 have witnessed every year since 1910. But on this night, the fans who filled the stands would witness a different kind of sporting event – games on the gridiron. The visiting Cougars won the coin toss but deferred till the second half, kicking off to Pendleton. They promptly held the Buckaroos to a 3 and out forcing a punt. Mountain View then took over with quarterback Matt Robertson under center, leading the Cougars on a well-organized opening drive of short passes, and efficient running from tailback Scott McCreery to the Pendleton 4 yard line before a bad snap sailed over the head of Robertson for the Cougars first turnover of 2008. But the Less than 2 minutes later, the Cougar offense would strike again as Robertson found a wide open Pat Cashman streaking over the middle for a 45 yard touchdown pass, and suddenly it was 13-0 (after a missed extra point). Scott Plants then took over at quarterback in the 2nd quarter and after a short drive, the Cougars were forced to punt. Plants, who is also the Mountain View punter saw the ball fly over his head on a bad snap, and after scrambling through several Buckaroo defenders was tackled just short of the first down. Pendleton now had the ball on another Cougar mistake, but once again could not get anything done against the Mountain View defense led by Tony DeLosAngeles and Bill Thompson (to name a few). When the Cougars began their next drive, Plants found an opening through the middle of the Pendleton defense and raced 35 yards for the score and a The Cougars would then force a Buckaroo turnover at the 34 yard line, taking over with just 19 seconds on the clock. Two plays later, Plants found wide receiver Jesse Zapata on a beautiful 29 yard pass play to the Pendleton 4 yard line with 5 seconds on the clock. In spite of a first half that was filled with mistakes and missed opportunities by the Cougar offense & special teams, the The third quarter would see Pendleton score their first and only touchdown as they went on a terrific drive through the But Mountain View would answer right back as quarterback Matt Robertson led the Cougars on a 75 yard drive culminating in a 7 yard touchdown pass to Jesse Zapata making it 25-8 (after another missed extra point). The Cougars would finish off the scoring in the 4th quarter with another marvelous drive led by the running of Scott McCreery and the passing of Scott Plants. McCreery, who finished with 120 yards rushing, scored from 3 yards out and Mountain View had an insurmountable 32-8 lead with 8:21 left in the game. Once again this week, the With the win, the Fifth Ranked Cougars moved to 3-0 on the season (1-0 in IMC league play) and face cross-town rival COUGARS DOMINATE AGAIN! Mountain View running back Scott McCreery rushed for 169 yards, including a spectacular 41 yard touchdown, in a 42-7 blowout of Eagle Point. COUGARS NAME NEW HEAD COACH! With the retirement of Mountain View Head Football Coach John Nehl, after the most successful season in team history, the school announced Wednesday (2/13) that they were promoting Assistant Coach Steve Turner to the head job. Coach Turner brings 32 years of high school coaching experience, including 10 years as a head coach. Turner is a graduate of Capuchino HS in San Bruno, CA where he was a teammate of former Major League all-star Keith Hernandez, and was himself an all-league player in football. Turner went on to play football at Willamette University in Salem, starting all four years and graduating in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science in Education.
His first coaching experience was at Cascade HS in Turner, OR where his team won the state Championship in 1980. In 1985, Coach Turner accepted his first head coaching position at Rainer HS. Three years later, he was offered the job of Defensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach at perennial football powerhouse, North Medford HS. In 1993, Coach Turner helped lead the Black Tornado to the 4A state championship.
Turner’s migration to Central Oregon came in 1998 when he was named the Head Football Coach at Crook County High School. During his 7 years as Head Coach, he led the Cowboys to their highest finish in recent memory, 2nd place, and is the last Head Coach to lead Crook County to a winning season.
In 2005, Coach Nehl asked Turner to join his staff as Offensive Line Coach, helping turn the Cougars line into one of the best in the State! The process to find a successor to Coach Nehl began in December with scores of very well qualified coaches from around the country applying. The list was then narrowed to 4 applicants in early February. In the end, the search committee found that the best person for the job, was right under their noses.
The hiring of Coach Turner will keep the continuity within the coaching staff, and continue the tradition of excellence that Mountain View has set in motion with back to back IMC League titles in the past two years. In addition to his coaching duties this fall, Coach Turner will also join the teaching staff at Mountain View High School.
